Halo Studios published a detailed art-direction interview on July 16 explaining how it rebuilt Halo: Combat Evolved rather than simply replacing the original assets with higher-resolution versions.

Five rules for the new art direction

The art team identified five guiding ideas: military science fiction, spectacle, grounded readability, environmental storytelling and deliberate respect for the original design. Artists repeatedly compared the 2001 game, Combat Evolved Anniversary, early Bungie concept work and later Halo designs before approving changes.

Project Foundry served as a production test for the move to Unreal Engine 5. The studio says that work influenced environments, materials, atmosphere and its treatment of the Flood. Unreal features including Nanite, Niagara, Lumen and Mega Lights gave artists more direct control over how those ideas appeared in the game.

Where the remake stays close to Halo CE

The remake is designed to preserve the original campaign's route and atmosphere while rebuilding its spaces and assets for modern hardware. Halo Studios specifically described darker environments, a closer return to the mystery of the 2001 game and a menu scene recreated with the same in-game ring model used elsewhere.

Operation: METEORITE gave the team more freedom than the ten remade missions. Its Covenant vessel and Sacristan faction use a more ornate, severe visual language while remaining connected to established Covenant design. See our Operation: METEORITE overview for the three-mission structure.

Missions shown in the interview

The interview shows how lighting and environmental detail can change navigation as well as character presentation. The artists discuss Halo, Assault on the Control Room, 343 Guilty Spark and The Maw most directly.
