Halo: Campaign Evolved Co-op and Crossplay Guide
Halo: Campaign Evolved supports four-player online co-op, crossplay and cross-progression, plus two-player split-screen on consoles.
Halo: Campaign Evolved supports up to four players online across Xbox, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5. Cross-platform play and cross-progression use a linked Microsoft account. Consoles support two-player split-screen; PC does not support local split-screen.
Co-op support matrix
| Feature | Xbox / PlayStation 5 | Windows PC / Steam |
|---|---|---|
| Online campaign | Up to 4 players | Up to 4 players |
| Crossplay | Yes, linked Microsoft account | Yes, linked Microsoft account |
| Cross-progression | Yes | Yes |
| Local split-screen | 2 players; no Game Pass / PlayStation Plus required | Not supported |
Host and progression rules
Mission availability follows the host's campaign progress. You can join a host who is further ahead, but that does not automatically remove progression gates from your own campaign menu.
Mission completion, Rally Points, Skulls, Terminals and supported achievement progress can synchronize. Exact mid-mission positions do not. If the group cannot finish in one sitting, expect to resume from the checkpoint available to the Fireteam Leader.
Steam and cross-platform invites
Steam friends can invite one another through Steam. Cross-platform groups use Xbox network connections, so check the linked Microsoft account before starting a long mission or collectible run.
PS5 local split-screen does not require PlayStation Plus
Halo Studios initially stated incorrectly that PlayStation Plus was required for local split-screen on PS5. The studio later corrected the claim in its official statement and Halo Waypoint Q&A.
For two-player split-screen on one PS5, each player needs a separate PlayStation Network account linked to a Microsoft account, but neither player needs a PlayStation Plus subscription. A standard PlayStation account is sufficient for local split-screen.
PlayStation Plus is still required for online network co-op on PS5. If a local split-screen pair invites players on another console or PC and expands into a three- or four-player network Fireteam, additional subscription requirements may apply depending on console sharing and account subscription status.
PRACTICAL SETUP
Cross-platform Fireteam setup
Check account links before a long campaign session so invites and shared progress use the right profiles.
- Install the same current game update on every platform and finish any first-launch prompts.
- Link each Xbox, PlayStation or Steam profile to the Microsoft account that should retain cross-platform progress.
- For console split-screen, sign the second player into a separate platform profile and a separate linked Microsoft account.
- Choose the Fireteam Leader before launching. Available missions, Rally Points and Skulls follow the leader’s campaign state.
- Test one short lobby and return to the campaign menu before beginning a collectible or Legendary session.
Troubleshooting
Start with the account and progression rules documented by Halo Support.
Invite not visible
Confirm both players are using the intended linked Microsoft accounts, then compare platform privacy and cross-network permissions.
Mission unavailable
Check the Fireteam Leader’s campaign progress and switch leaders if another player owns the required mission or Rally Point.
Progress looks incomplete
Return to the campaign menu after a completed mission and verify the mission, Skull, Terminal or Achievement separately; exact mid-mission positions are not shared checkpoints.
Local session becomes online
Re-check the subscription requirements when a two-player console split-screen session invites a third or fourth player over the network.
