Halo: Campaign Evolved Film Grain — How to Disable It and Fix Blurry Visuals

Reduce Halo: Campaign Evolved film grain and blurry visuals with official PC settings first, then an optional community Engine.ini workaround.

Halo: Campaign Evolved PC players are reporting film grain, color fringing and a soft image during Early Access. Halo Support's current graphics guide does not document a dedicated film-grain toggle, but it does provide supported settings that can improve clarity. A separate Engine.ini workaround is circulating in the community; that method is unofficial, PC-only and has not worked for everyone.

What Halo Support has confirmed

Halo Support lists one specific known issue: using DLSS Low together with Low graphics quality can produce visual grain, haze or oversized lens flares. Because Low upscaling quality renders at 33% resolution before reconstruction, it can also look much softer than Native.

For the least altered image available through the supported menu, Halo Support recommends TSR with Minimum Frame Rate set to None. TSR then behaves similarly to temporal anti-aliasing without dynamic resolution. Start with a 100% Resolution Scale; raising it above 100% can sharpen the image further, but the extra GPU cost can be substantial.

Try these settings before changing a configuration file:

  1. Open Settings → Video → Advanced.
  2. If you use DLSS, FSR or XeSS, change Upscaling Quality from Low to Native when performance allows.
  3. Alternatively, select TSR, set Minimum Frame Rate to None and use a 100% Resolution Scale.
  4. Compare the same checkpoint without Frame Generation. Generated frames can add their own artifacts, so this test helps separate film grain from reconstruction blur.

These steps do not switch off the artistic film-grain layer. They remove other common causes of a fuzzy image and stay within the officially supported settings.

Optional PC community workaround

Players on Reddit and Steam have shared an Unreal Engine configuration edit that disables film grain and chromatic aberration. This is not an official Halo Support fix. It changes a local game configuration file, may be overwritten by an update and may behave differently between the Steam and Xbox app builds.

Back up the file before editing:

  1. Close Halo: Campaign Evolved.
  2. In File Explorer, open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Meteorite\Saved\Config\Windows.
  3. If Engine.ini already exists, copy it and name the copy Engine.ini.backup. If it does not exist, create a plain-text file named Engine.ini.
  4. Add the following lines. If the file already contains a [SystemSettings] section, add only the three setting lines under the existing heading.
[SystemSettings]
r.FilmGrain=0
r.Tonemapper.GrainQuantization=0
r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0
  1. In File Explorer, enable View → Show → File name extensions and confirm the file is named Engine.ini, not Engine.ini.txt.
  2. Launch the game and compare the same area. If the game ignores or removes the file, some players report that marking Engine.ini as read-only preserves it. Remove the read-only flag before changing settings or installing a game update.

If the edit causes a problem, close the game, delete the edited file and restore the backup. Do not add unrelated Lumen, ray-reconstruction or mouse-input commands just to disable film grain; those settings change other systems and make troubleshooting harder.

Why the image can still look blurry

Film grain is only one layer of the final image. Low internal resolution, dynamic resolution, temporal upscaling, chromatic aberration and Frame Generation can each affect clarity. Community results reflect that: some players report that the Engine.ini edit fixed the grain, while others still saw blur until they changed from DLSS to TSR, and some reported no improvement.

If the grain disappears but the picture remains soft, return to the supported settings and test one change at a time:

  • use Native upscaling quality or TSR at 100% Resolution Scale;
  • set Minimum Frame Rate to None so the game does not lower resolution to maintain a target;
  • turn off Frame Generation for the comparison;
  • avoid DLSS Low combined with the Low graphics preset.

Our PC settings guide covers the wider performance and image-quality tradeoffs. Current driver crashes and other launch problems are tracked in the Early Access known-issues report.

Can film grain be disabled on Xbox or PlayStation 5?

The Engine.ini method is for Windows PC and cannot be applied on consoles. Halo Support currently documents Quality and Performance modes on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, but it does not list a console film-grain switch or an official console workaround. Changing graphics mode may alter overall sharpness through resolution and upscaling, but it is not the same as disabling film grain.
